The lines are a result of compression. If you remove the interpolating lines the brain still sees the image by filling in the gaps. That is how they reduced the size. The original high quality videos are in the possession of Jeff Wayne, I have just removed the interpolation lines and extrapolated what should be in between. Filling the holes s it were.

I have it running on Windows 7. You need the later binary.

@@yereverluvinuncleber I tried the one from an ISO i downloaded that has the _inmm.dll and patched exe (from 2012) bundled with it, but since i have no idea where that dll is supposed to go, i stuck it in system32/drivers, but apparently that didn't do anything. I'm STILL getting the "smackw32.dll not found" error as well as now the one about the other dll. I'm just stuck. To be honest, I'm just about ready to give up on this endevour and just try remaking the game in Unreal on my own, sure, that'd take years, I'd also likely never get licensing from Jeff so selling it or even releasing it at all would probably be a no-go, I can't ask on the official WoTW forums because they no longer exist, but at this point...

@@OCMOOO We came up with some supporting software and a multiplayer networked version of the game but the latter did not work, so we gave up. I will try again.

@@yereverluvinuncleber That's incredible dude! Honestly made my day talking to one of the devs of one of my favorite childhood games! How would you consider improving the AI of non-player (enemies)

@@OCMOOO Well, the networking code for example, it was implemented but never tested. Also some utilities that were built for it are a little dated and need to be brought up to date to work on later versions of Windows. The code is now very old and will require some very old versions of C+ to resurrect it - and the old code needs to be found. I had access and I now to find it again. I cannot promise anything.

I have a feeling it will be but it is not imminent. I feel Jeff Wayne would have to pass away first! I did have the source code for the game for a short while and I was working with the developer to come up with a network version but that all died a death...

@@yereverluvinuncleber How did you get hold of the source code? How did you get in contact with the devs? Didn't the dev company go under years ago? I'd love for an updated version of this game that runs on win 10, even if it uses the original engine, though I'd rather see it get properly remade in UE5 as an RTS. This game doesn't really work well as a console game, as the PS1 shooter wasn't really that good, and if this game ever does get remade, i hope it'll be an RTS, not a shooter. I'm actually making a fighting machine (as i mentioned on a few of your other videos), but i'm struggling with a few details on the model, i'm planning to put it in Unreal when i've finished it and eventually redo the martian intro as a 'proof of concept' sort of thing, but it may take me quite a while.

I worked on some extensions/addons for the game and for a short period I was contacted by one of the original game devs. We worked on a multi-player version briefly but it did not seem to work. I shortly after moved house.I will get in touch with him again. I'll add it to my To-Do list.

@@yereverluvinuncleber Yeah, i tried following instructions for installing the game from a mounted ISO, but it just wouldn't have it, kept throwing an error at me saying it couldn't find a file called "smackw32.dll", i hunted it down online and installed it in both my main system32 folder and the drivers subfolder, but the installer still wouldn't detect it, then i noticed that the file the installer is looking for is IN the ISO, in the winsys folder. I guess i could try again. Failing that, I guess Unreal is the only option for a true revival of this game. If you ever get in touch with the original devs, or better yet, Jeff, ask if it would be possible to port the game to UE5

@@TheGuardianofAzarath I am quite certain that porting the game to a game engine and providing compatibility with such disparate systems as the Nintendo Switch's custom Unix OS and the significantly inadaptive OSes of the PlayStation and XBOX would require the game to be entirely rewritten, so the consequence would be less of a remaster, and more of a remake. What you describe is not trivial. However, with the advent of decent cross-platform alternatives to DirectX, and game-engines allowing the foundation to require little modification, I expect that a competent developer would be able to create a basic reproduction of this alone, if the voice-files were possible to reuse without breaking DMCA.

it's basically an alternative version where the military manages to defeat all the Martians from the first cylinder, causing the other cylinders to reroute to land all across Britain rather than just London, forming a base in the Scottish highlands. They also seem to be immune to disease in this version, and have to be defeated by force. (The journalist also appears to go directly to the military in this version, so maybe his wanderings from the book/album don't happen.)

@@JohnSmith-jd4qm I think the civilians when they saw the martians (in the cutscene) thry immedialy start running, only theres 3 dudes there (maybe they brought alot of military attention to bring more guns i guess?) also the main protagonist directly going to military officers

Ah, but the book implies they have no functioning immune system, all disease having been conquered a thousand or more years before. A hundred additional years or so of genetic engineering may be required to re-establish a population that can colonise earth and survive. All this work delayed as without any sample humans nor specimens of disease it may be difficult to engineer a new species that can survive unknown pathogens. No Martians were able to leave the planet as the interplanetary method of travel they chose was decidedly a one-way trip. So, by my reckoning they will return toward the end of this century. Just be thankful you will be an old man and will have lived, hopefully, a happy life. They WILL return.
